This work studied a new type of two-step nuclear reaction, the so-called breakup-fusion (BF) reaction, in which the direct breakup reaction takes place first followed by the fusion of one of the fragments into the target nucleus. Firstly, the author discussed the formalism developed by Udagawa and Tamura (UT), and also the details of method of numerical calculations. Using the theory the author calculated extensively the reactions induced by light composite particles such as ..cap alpha..-particle and h. The author reported the results of these calculations and compared them with experiments. The calculations were performed of energy spectra and angular distributions of (..cap alpha..,p), (..cap alpha..,d), (..cap alpha..,t), (h,p) and (h,d) reactions by considering the simplest BF process where the first breakup is a simple elastic breakup reaction. From the results of the above calculations the author found that the BF mechanism describes well the reactions corresponding to the continuum spectra which is in between the high energy part of the discrete peaks corresponding to the direct processes, and the low energy part of a broad peak corresponding to the compound nucleus process.
