A study has been made to determine the comparative merits of extracting oil in situ by the two mechanisms of electrical induction heating of oil shale. The study shows that for oil shale and the other solid fossil fuels - coal, oil sand and heavy oil in an even greater degree - the result of heating by energy absorption from eddy currents induced by a low-frequency magnetic field is more practical, economic, and generally applicable, than from the displacement currents induced by a high-frequency electric field. 4 refs.
