Complete testing of the NIOSH method for the determination of trace metals by atomic absorption spectrophotometry

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5138869
A full collaborative test is conducted for evaluation of NIOSH Analytical Method P and CAM 173, 'General Procedure for Metals.' The method is applicable to the determination of 25 metals in airborne dusts and fumes by direct aspiration atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Aerosols of cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, and nickel are generated using aqueous metal nitrate solutions. Results show that the overall precision of the NIOSH method is 30% for lead, the best element. The method is found to understate the aerosol concentration by 9 to 23% for the five metals.
