As a part of an air quality study along roadways, four types of aerosol samplers consisting of high volume samplers (Hivol), stacked filter units (SFU), Lundgren impactors, and cascade impactors were evaluated while collecting aerosol samples. Reproducibility tests showed that the element and total suspended particulate (TSP) results varied within about 25% from the mean for both the SFU and Hivol under most conditions. Results from the regular sample collection program showed that the SFU/Hivol ratio for TSP was 0.62 with a standard deviation of 17%. Correlation studies showed that Hivol give weaker element correlations due to the lack of particle sizing. The stacked filter unit was found to be the most satisfactory since it is inexpensive and readily portable and since it performs particle sizing and measures TSP.
