Production of aromatic hydrocarbons from coking feedstocks
The chemical industry of the USSR is continuously increasing the scale of production of synthetic fibers, plastics, rubber, detergents, pharmaceuticals and other products produced chiefly from aromatic hydrocarbons. In the majority of cases the principal supplier of these hydrocarbons continues to be the coking industry. The quality of the products does not always meet the specifications for feedstocks for organic synthesis. For a number of years, studies have been conducted to develop the scientific basis and schemes for comprehensive utilization and refining of various coal tars, aromatic fractions, and groups of compounds included in them. Hydrogenation of various classes of organic compounds over a wide range of pressure (4-60 MPa) and temperatures (200-500/sup 0/C) using technical catalysts were studied. This permitted the general principles of conversion of organic compounds during hydrogenation to be established and the optimal conditions for production of benzene, naphthalene and other compounds, as well as mixtures with uniform chemical composition to be determined.
