This presentation will discuss the variation of petroleum composition as a function of atmospheric equivalent boiling point (AEBP). Recent experimental data will be presented to illustrate changes in hydrogen deficiency, heteroatom concentrations (S, N, O, V, Ni, and Fe), molecular weight distribution, and average molecular parameters with decreasing volatility and solubility of heavy crude components. This talk will emphasize the importance of heavy oil fractionations to produce fractions having progressively higher AEBPs which, then, can be subjected to the detailed molecular characterization and compared on a consistent basis.
