The determination of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) of pitches and resids is important for industry utilization of heavy hydrocarbons. In literature many methods were proposed for determining the MWD of various pitches by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), in which some authors take the number average molecular weights (Mn) from vapor pressure osmometry method (VPO) vs. elution volume (Ve) as the calibration curve of test samples, the error was about 30% (2,5). In addition, in most GPC chromatograms, there was only one diffused peak with tailing and there were few reports about high performance GPC. In this paper a method for determining MWD of resids, heavy oils and pitch, etc., is established by high performance GPC and VPO. The Mn(S) of test samples determined by GPC calibration curve established is in good agreement with Mn(V) from VPO. The average relative deviation is 3.16% and the largest relative deviation is 7.91%. In addition, present method has the advantages of rapid and high resolution.
