Chemical species of migrating radionuclides at Maxey Flats and other shallow land burial sites

A research program is described for the determination of chemical species of migrating radionuclides at shallow land burial sites. An experimental trench and inert atmosphere sampling wells were installed at Maxey Flats to establish the means for study of saturated and unsaturated flow in and near a simulated waste burial trench and a waste burial trench. Preliminary results establish that plutonium exists in the subsurface water entering the experimental trench mostly in the reduced forms. Related measurements of surface distributions of radionuclides at Maxey Flats confirm that surface contamination has been retained largely within the fenced area.
