Descriptions of the achievements and the status of the JFT-2/JFT-2a, JFT-2M, and Doublet-III at JAERI are given. A table illustrates tokamak devices in Japan. JIPP-T-II and JIPP-TII-U, hybrids of tokamaks and stellarators, are discussed. The JT-60, a tokamak device built to achieve a break-even plasma condition, is shown under construction. High-field tokamaks TRIAM-1 and TRIAM-1M are described, their objectives being the study of high-field elongated plasmas, turbulent heating, and radio-frequency current drive. Objectives and characteristics of the Reacting Plasma Experiment are presented. Small tokamaks WT-II and WT-III, Toriut-4, TNT-A, Hybtok-I and CSTN-II are programs focused on. Design study and technology development of the fusion experimental reactor program at the JAERI present objectives to be reached in the latter half of the 1990's.
