Active information systems perform dynamic analyses of the contents of a real time database of observations of a real world system. The purpose of these automated analytical activities is the identification of certain states of the physical system being observed which are of interest to the information system users. In typical applications, the observations provided by external sensors and measuring devices are both imprecise and uncertain, thus requiring the development of special representation and manipulation approaches for information with those characteristics. This paper provides a brief characterization of the concept of active information system and presents an approach to the representation of imprecision and uncertainty which is based on the entity relationship data model of Chen. 8 references.
