The plant of South African Coal Oil and Gas Corp., Ltd., at Sasolburg was expanded to produce gas for ammonia synthesis and a 500 Btu industrial gas in addition to synthetic liquid hydrocarbons. The plant uses Lurgi coal gasification, Lurgi Rectisol, and Lurgi Phenosolvan processes. Present production of 219 million cu ft/day is provided by 11 of the 13 installed gasifiers. Over the 17 years of operation the plant has achieved an average long-term availability of 85 percent on the gasifiers and 97 percent on the Rectisol gas purification streams. In the Phenosolvan plant, oil, tar, and solids are removed from the gas liquor by separation and filtration, water-soluble phenols extracted by an organic solvent, and ammonia recovered by steam stripping. Effluent water is purified in a biological process to meet strict requirements.
