The relation between sources of sulfur dioxide and the deposition of sulfates in precipitation is discussed in this paper. It has been the subject of intensive investigation during the last ten years. The exploration of the causes and effects of acid deposition as well as the need to understand the consequences of various emissions control scenarios has lead to the development of quantitative models to explore this source-receptor relation. Most efforts have focused on construction of theoretical models which account for the transport, chemical transformation and deposition of sulfur species. The author focuses on the derivation of source-receptor relations from empirical data. Changes in precipitation chemistry which follow from large changes in emissions at particular sources in order to extract a concentration signal from the very substantial level of noise created by meteorological variability. For receptors which are affected by emissions from many sources, such as any point in eastern North America, the isolation of the effect of any one source may be impossible. But the grouping of sources leads to a loss of information and a lack of generalizability of derived relations.
