Catalytic oxidation of SO sub 2 to SO sub 3 in the presence of fly ash

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5135534
This patent describes a combustion gas conditioning method whereby particulates are removed from the main stream of combustion gases containing sulfur dioxide in a flue by electrostatic precipitation means. It comprises: the steps of withdrawing from a location upstream of the electrostatic precipitation means a minor amount of the total volume of the combustion gases entering the flue, including the particulates associated with the minor amount of combustion gases; contacting the minor amount of combustion gases and particulates associated therewith with catalytic means to convert SO{sub 2} contained therein to SO{sub 3}; and mixing the minor amount of combustion gases and SO{sub 3} into the main stream of combustion gases and subjecting the mixture formed thereby to electrostatic precipitation; wherein the catalytic means is exposed to the combustion gases within an open gas flow passage whereby particulates freely flow therethrough without substantially interfering with the catalytic conversion of SO{sub 2} to SO{sub 3} by the catalytic means.
