Consideration of a tumor probability function and micro-dosimetry for the lower pulmonary compartment
- eds.
A new approach to evaluating the hazard from radioactive particulate inhalation is proposed. The approach is to assess the hazard by calculating the tumorigenicity of small particles based on a relationship for tumor probability per cell as a function of radiation dose. The method described uses data from experiments on rats to develop the needed tumor probability function for single cells. This probability function is then used to calculate the tumor probability for individual exposed cells (either skin or lung) and the summation for all exposed cells yields a total tumor probability for the exposure. Results are reported from studies using cultured HeLa cells, human conjunctiva and liver cells, rat lung and skin cells, and mouse skin cells exposed to a 1.0 micron particle of /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ and an anatomical model of a human lung.
