Formation MWD benefits evaluation and efficiency

This article describes some recent applications of gamma ray and formation resistivity measurements-while-drilling (MWD) for real-time formation evaluation and drilling efficiency. These measurements are provided, in addition to the already well publicized directional measurements, in multisensor MWD tools. They are being used primarily to reduce wireline logging costs, to save rig time, to provide good operational decisions, and to contribute towards risk avoidance. Applications are particularly useful in deeper water and higher cost areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast, U.S. East Coast, North Sea, and European North West Margin. We estimate that nearly 50% of the expenditures for MWD in the U.S. Gulf Coast and 30% worldwide are for multisensor MWD tools which, among other sensors, incorporate gamma ray and formation resistivity.
