Synthesis, structure, and protonation studies of Cp{sup *}MH{sub 3} (dppe) (M = Mo, W). Pseudo-trigonal-prismatic vs pseudo-octahedral structures for half-sandwich group 6 M(IV) derivatives

With the aim of generating stable 17-electron polyhydride species for further activation and reactivity studies, the authors have synthesized new compounds of the general class ({eta}{sup 5}-ring) MH{sub 3}L{sub 2} (ring = cyclopentadienyl ligand, M = group 6 metal, L = tertiary phosphine). Oxidation studies of these derivatives had not previously been reported, while protonation studies were limited to ({eta}{sup 5}-C{sub 5}H{sub 4}Pr{sup i})MoH{sub 3}(PMe{sub 3}){sub 2} with HCl and water to generate [({eta}{sup 5}-C{sub 5}H{sub 4}Pr{sup i})MoO(PMe{sub 3}){sub 2}]{sup +}. In this contribution, the authors examine the protonation of the new polyhydride species Cp{sup *}MH{sub 3}(dppe) (M = Mo, 1; W, 2). Oxidation studies of these compounds will be reported in a later contribution. 74 refs., 7 figs., 4 tabs.
