On the structure and extinction of partially-premixed flames

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5127983
The interaction and extinction dynamics of a partially-premixed flame ensemble, consisting of a premixed flame and a nonpremixed flame, are theoretically and experimentally studied for the counterflow configuration generated by a premixed fuel/oxidizer/inert stream and a fuel/inert stream. Theoretical results show that, depending on the relative intensities of the two flames, extinction of either the nonpremixed or the premixed flame can occur first, leading to either complete flame extinction of the creation of a merged flame. Experimental results show that extinction of both flames always occurs simultaneously, and that at extinction the two flames can be either merged or separated depending on their relative stoichiometries and the preferential diffusion nature of the mixtures.
