This paper covers the inspection of pressure vessels. It includes a description of the various types of pressure vessels and the standards that can be used for their construction and maintenance. The reasons for inspection, the causes of deterioration, the frequency and methods of inspection, the methods of repair, and the preparation of records and reports are also covered. Safe operation is emphasized. The information contained in this publication was previously presented as Chapters VI and VII of the Guide for Inspection of Petroleum Refinery Equipment, which is currently being reorganized as individual recommended practices. API Recommended Practice 572 is the result of an accelerated program API has undertaken to review and revise its standards to ensure that they mandate the high level of environmental performance for which APIs members wish to be known.
