Environmental effects of alternative energy developments in the northern Great Plains

Journal Article · · Comput Oper. Res.; (United States)
A model is used to characterize environmental conditions in the 5-state northern Great Plains region of the U.S. Current conditions resulting from the development of the region's energy resources (primarily coal) are compared, particularly in relation to residuals entitled to the air and water. Various scenarios of energy resource development are investigated. Particulates, sulphur oxides, BOD and suspended solids are considered. Results of the analysis can be used to evaluate development policies.
