Influence of anode spots on characteristics of a plasma electron emitter with constricted arc discharge

Journal Article · · High Temp. (USSR) (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5121601
It is shown that in a plasma emitter consisting of a constricted arc discharge with a cold cathode in a magnetic field, the current density near the emission aperture can attain threshold values, above which anode spots appear on the surface of the principal anode. Switching of the arc to a burning mode with an anode spot is accompanied by the appearance of instabilities and by restriction of the emission current. Methods are analyzed for increasing the threshold current for formation of anode spots.
