Influence of ozone on the photosynthesis of mature trees under natural conditions

Journal Article · · Bull. Ecol. Soc. Am.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5120747
Field measurements of photosynthetic rates were made for mature Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and White ash (Fraxinus americana) trees exposed to ozone. Ozone levels approaching ambient air concentrations were used. A low cost computer system was designed and built to measure photosynthesis as well as monitor environmental factors. Low levels of ozone were found to greatly decrease the photosynthetic rate of White ash while moderately affecting Sugar maple. The advantages of using computers for remote field studies are discussed.
