The bunch length can be measured by the comparison of two Fourier components of the beam. This technique has been applied to an electron bunch in the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring (AR). Since the rms bunch length of the AR is in a range from 1 cm to 4 cm, detected frequencies are in the Gigaherzt region. However, the detected frequency is restricted by the cutoff frequency of vacuum pipe, which imposes high resolution requirements on a detector. Preliminary experiments with a spectrum analyzer show that it is possible to measure the bunch length in real time with a stripline electrode.
