This patent describes an apparatus for positioning geophones in shallow holes in the earth comprising a geophone and a geophone planting tool engageable with the geophone to implant the geophone in the earth at the bottom of a shallow hole and to level and align the geophone in the shallow holes. The the geophone having an electrical conductor connected thereto. The the geophone planting tool being adapted to be engaged with the geophone and held in engagement therewith during implanting, leveling and aligning thereof by pressure on the conductor and to be disengaged from the geophone after aligning, leveling and implanting the geophone by release of pressure on the conductor.
