A full-scale demonstration of Limestone Injection Multi-Stage Burner (LIMB) technology is being done on a 105-MW wall-fired boiler at the Ohio Edison Company's Edgewater Plant in Lorain. The original objective of the LIMB project was to demonstrate that injection of limestone or lime-based sorbents into the combustion gases in the upper furnace of coal-burning power plants can result in a 50 to 60% reduction in SO{sub 2}, and that the specially designed multi-stage coal-combustion burners used in the project significantly retard NO{sub x} formation. The paper describes the Base LIMB process, the LIMB with Humidification, and Coolside, a modification which uses the humidifier to cool fuel gas to increase the solubility of SO{sub 2} in water.
