The authors describe plasma physics experiments using the Nova laser that investigate the temporal and spectral characteristics of directly backscattered laser light. The stimulated Raman and Brillouin instabilities are studied for a variety of plasma conditions, drive laser intensities, and beam smoothing conditions. The experimental facility, beam smoothing techniques, and some experimental results are described.
