Rate constants and the kinetic isotope effect for the tautomerization of pophine imbedded in a n-hexane Shpol'skii matrix near 110 K have been measured with laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. A one-dimensional tunneling model calculation has been used to compare the feasibility of the synchronous and asynchronous hydrogen migration mechanisms. Only the asynchronous tunneling model is consistent with the rate constants and kinetic isotope effects measured near 110 K and near room temperature. 22 refs., 7 figs.
