The HTGR nuclear system was conceived in 1957 and, at Gulf General Atomic (GA), has advanced through research, development and design, and operation of a prototype, the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. The Peach Bottom 40-MWe HTGR began commercial power operation on 1 June 1967, and was decommissioned in October 1974. It was part of the Philadelphia Electric Co., system in Pennsylvania. Similar projects have been undertaken in parallel in Europe, including the Dragon 20-MWt experimental reactor which began full-power operation in April 1966. The exchange of information between Peach Bottom and Dragon projects, which had been taking place since 1960, has made a significant contribution to the technology behind the Fort St. Vrain and follow-on larger HTGR design. The Public Service Co.'s decision in the Spring of 1965 to proceed with construction of Fort St. Vrain followed very active participation for over ten years in nuclear research and development activities.
