Kinetic studies of the oxygenation of the reduced sulfur species at pH values of 4, 7.55, and 10 were made. The reaction was determined to be first order with respect to reduced sulfur at all pH values and nearly first order with respect to oxygen at pH 7.55. Reaction products were determined, and an overall kinetic model was developed to more fully understand the complex reaction mechanism involved. The model suggested parallel reactions between reduced sulfur species and oxygen to form sulfite, thiosulfate, and sulfate. Reasonable predictions of reactant and product concentrations were obtained.
