The abiotic homogeneous aqueous-phase elimination reaction of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane to 1,1,2-trichloroethene has been studied. The reaction has been carried out in 0.100 M phosphate buffer in the pH range 5-9 and at 11 temperatures. In all cases, quantitative conversion of the 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane to 1,1,2-trichloroethene was observed. The reaction is second order overall and fits the equation log k/sub e/ = (15.87 +- 0.54) exp((-91.1 +- 3.4 kJmol)RT). 7 references, 3 figures, 2 tables.
