Marine pipe-laying operations must be abandoned with severe weather conditions. So, it is essential to simulate safe operational conditions and determine the exact combined conditions which signal pipeline abandonment. By understanding the limits of envionmental conditions as a function of wave and current directions, efficiency of pipe-lay vessels can be improved. Downtime because of too early abandonment also can be decreased or avoided. Sample problems were computer simulated to determine conditions in the pipeline. One case involved an operation in which waves and current forces acted perpendicular to pipeline. The other case involved waves and current forces acting parallel to pipeline, in the same direction as the barge heading. All possible variables were held constant except wave and current direction. When waves and current were perpendicular to pipeline, stresses were 124% above those where waves and currents were parallel with the pipe-lay vessel heading.
