The results of a four year study into the feasibility of using wood fuels to carry the peak load requirements of a proposed new central steam facility at the University of Kansas campus in Lawrence are summarized. The presumed primary fuel for this new plant is municipal solid waste. It is concluded that the addition of a separate wood fired furnace is technically and economically feasible. The following topics are covered: burning wood as a supplement to solid waste; available wood supply; growth, yield, and management implications on firewood plantations for eastern Kansas; insect and disease management in energy forest plantations; cost analysis - energy forest plantations; chipping wood; transportation of wood; and environmental impacts.
