Indirect mechanisms in electron-impact ionization of multiply charged ions

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5111462

The important role of indirect-ionization mechanisms in electron-impact ionization of multiply charged ions has been emphasized by some recent experiments conducted with the ORNL-ECR multicharged ion source. Illustrative examples of investigations of the Mg-isoelectronic and Fe-isonuclear sequences are presented and compared with the results of detailed theoretical calculations. New experimental data is also presented concerning the role of resonance effects in the ionization of Li-like O/sup 5 +/ and Na-like Fe/sup 15 +/ ions.
