Report on the Warrior Coal Basin

Book ·
OSTI ID:5111424

The Warrior Coal Basin is the southwest end of the visible Coal Measures of the Warrior Coal Field. The basin is made up of shales, sandstones, conglomerates and stone coals. The shales and sandstones are from the great bulk of the strata. The coals are in from 2 to 5 regular seams in each of 6 groups. The groups are the Black Creek, Horse Creek, Pratt, Cobb, Gwin, and Brookwood. The Horse Creek and the Pratt are the principal groups. The coal seams range in thickness from a few inches to some 16 feet. Most of the coal can be mined with ease and cheapness. The coals, though all bituminous, are of various kinds. The basin also has almost inexhaustible quantities, fine building, paving and curbing stones, and fine material for the manufacture of vitrified bricks, tiles, etc. The basin is covered by its virgin forest of short and long leaf pines and the different varieties of hardwood. Each of the 6 groups are discussed. Topographic maps are included. (DP)
