Continuous method for preparation of C/sub 14/-C/sub 18/ and C/sub 17/-C/sub 20/ synthetic fatty acid nitriles
The aim of this investigation was to develop a highly efficient catalytic process for the synthesis of synthetic fatty acid nitriles which would enable us to completely automate the engineering process and to obtain the desired end product in a high yield while avoiding the vacuum distillation stage. The investigation was carried out on a column type flow-type apparatus in the presence of a catalyst based on aluminum oxide that we had previously developed. It was found that nitriles obtained from C/sub 14/-C/sub 18/ and C/sub 17/-C/sub 20/ fractions of synthetic fatty acids did not require vacuum distillation. The rate of the nitrilation reaction is determined by the rate of desorption of the reaction water from active centers on the catalyst.
