One- and two-dimensional photochemical modeling of the chemical interactions in the middle atmosphere (0-120 km)

Photochemical modeling studies of the middle atmosphere are described, with particular emphasis on the photochemistry of the nitrogen oxides, their production in the lower thermosphere, and possible transport to the stratosphere. A one-dimensional photochemical model which treated the troposphere and stratosphere has been extended to include the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. This model has been used to study the ion and neutral chemistry of charged particle precipitation events. The production of NO and OH by such events and their effects on atmospheric ozone in the stratosphere and mesosphere are described. A two-dimensional model has also been extended to treat the lower thermosphere and mesosphere, as well as the stratosphere and troposphere. Large amounts of NO are produced in the lower thermosphere, both by fast photoelectron impact on N2 during quiet times, and by auroral ionization. In a two-dimensional model, the NO produced can reach the stratosphere in large amounts near the pole during the polar night period. The effect of this large additional source of stratospheric NO from upper atmospheric phenomena on both stratospheric ozone and NO has been found to be substantial using presently accepted photochemistry.
