Engine valve train module

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5107365
This patent describes a valve train with rocker positioner that is adapted to be assembled as a valve train module, tested, shipped and then mounted to the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine in position to effect operation of the inlet and exhaust valves associated with the cylinder head via rocker arm assemblies pivotably supported on a first rocker shaft having axially spaced apart mounting apertures therethrough and the rocker arm assemblies pivotably supported on a second rocker shaft having axially spaced apart mounting apertures therethrough. The rocker arm assemblies are adapted to be actuated by an engine driven camshaft of the engine. The rocker positioner includes shaft retainer means to effect retention of the first rocker shaft and the second rocker shaft in spaced apart parallel alignment with respect to each other. Rocker positioning means effect and retain a predetermined axial operative position of the rocker arm assemblies on a respective associate the first rocker shaft and the second rocker shaft. Anti-rotation means maintain the angular position of the rocker arm assemblies at a position corresponding substantially to the operative position of each of the rocker arm assemblies as installed on the cylinder head of an engine; and, fastener means operatively associated with the rocker positioner and the first and second rocker shafts retain the elements together as a valve train module and then effect attachment of the rocker positioner and the first and second rocker shafts to the cylinder head of an engine whereby the valve train module will be secured in position to effect operation of the inlet and exhaust valves.
