Title: Driving circuit for pulsating radiation detector

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5103571

This patent describes a pulsing radiation detector system comprising means in a series circuit for emitting radiation in pulses of a selected, adjusted frequency (f), means responsive to pulses of radiation at the frequency for creating a control signal related to the received radiation, and a driving circuit for pulsing the radiation emitting means in the series circuit. The pulsing radiation detector further comprises: the driving circuit having means for creating voltage pulses in the series circuits. The pulses having a time base width (t) less than l/f in seconds, means of sensing current flow in the series circuit, means for limiting the current in the series circuit and means for adjusting the pulse width (t) as an inverse function of the sensed current. The radiation emitting means is a fluorescent light tube and the radiation pulses are light pulses; the pulse creating means including a transformer with a primary winding and a closely coupled secondary winding in the series circuit and means for applying pulses of voltage across the primary winding. The primary winding is divided into a first segment and a second segment and the pulse applying means includes means of applying voltage pulses alternately across the first and second segments. The current limiting means is a winding in the series circuit and loosely coupled with both the primary winding and the secondary winding.
