Design objectives for highly radioactive material handling and storage facilities in a reprocessing plant

Book ·
OSTI ID:5100703
A standard is presented that sets forth design objectives related to facilities for the handling and storage of highly radioactive materials in solid form. Within the scope of these design objectives are the following: (1) nuclear related safety; (2) dry or wet handling and storage; and (3) handling and storage of irradiated nuclear fuel, solidified radioactive waste or other like materials. The standard presents a minimum design objectives of facilities for the handling and storage of spent fuel. It contains requirements for the design of the spent fuel storage pool including spent fuel storage racks, pool makeup and cleanup systems, pool structure and integrity, radiation shielding, residual heat removal and radiation monitoring systems; the cask loading area including requirements for ventilation, containment and fire protection.
