A computer-controlled condensation nuclei counter is used to determine the Kelvin-equivalent size distribution of the Vienna urban aerosols in the range between 0.002 and 0.1 ..mu..m. During subsequent measuring cycles the aerosol is exposed to stepwise-increased well-defined supersaturations. Nuclei larger than the Kelvin-equivalent diameter corresponding to the selected supersaturation are activated as condensation nuclei and grow to droplets of visible sizes. By measuring the droplet concentrations at different supersaturation a cumulative Kelvin-equivalent size distribution of the aerosol was obtained.
