Plants in cities

Conference · · Proc Am Hortic Congr; (United States)

The problem of air pollution in urban areas and its relationship to plant growth is addressed. The major sources of pollution are from automobiles and from the fossil fuel industry. These hydrocarbon wastes combined with sunlight produce various photochemical oxidants which are poisonous to plants. Today researchers are confronted with the problem of selecting plants for cities. The answer to this problem seems to lie in selecting the naturally resistant plants and introducing and testing new plants for resistance.
