Deciphering tectonic basin history from sequence architecture and seismic facies progradations: The Goshute Valley, east central Nevada
- Univ. of Wyoming, Laramie, WY (United States). Dept. of Geology and Geophysics
Seismic sequence stratigraphy allows deciphering continental basin evolution and identifies tectonic subsidence which in turn controls longevity, type and distribution seismic facies (oblique progradational facies [OPF]; fault-front facies [FFF]). Depositional and structural geometries of continental basin-fill sequences reflect type and magnitude of tectonism. Sequence stratigraphy delineates five stages of basic development: (1) a pre-faulting sagging stage of the basin, (2) growth-faulting, (3) collapse of the intrabasin graben, (4) tectonic compression, and (5) deactivation. The first stages record a continuum of protracted extension during only one rifting phase. However compression and deactivation reflect basinal shrinking' evidenced by folded basin-fill strata or offlap geometry of sequences. The delicate balance between aggradation and progradation in the OPF provides a mechanism to quantify tectonic subsidence. Initiative of growing-faulting terminates OPF by increasing depositional slopes in a later direction. Likewise, the authors explain the absence of FFF at the onset of growth-faulting with the eastern intrabasin horst replacing the Toana Range as adjunct footwall to the basin. The overall progradational signature of seismic facies particularly during the sagging stage is the results of the depositional system adjusting to a new baselevel (forced regression).
