Synthetic crude oil processing residues used in asphalt blends

The Energy Research laboratories of CANMET, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, have studied the use of two classes of synthetic crude oil processing residues in asphalts. One class includes the distillation residues from hydroprocessing of bitumen/heavy oils/petroleum residuals. The other includes solvent extracts containing the bulk of nitrogenous components from synthetic crude gas oils. Both types of residues are generally undesirable materials whose disposal creates a significant economic impact. Utilization in asphalt blends might be the optimum solution. CANMET carried out a series of blending experiments which produced asphalt blends that meet the required specifications. The paper describes the residues used and summarizes the physical and chemical properties of the asphalt blends.
