Inclusive production of K sup minus and. pi. sup minus in relativistic nuclear collisions by the reactions: sup 28 Si + sup 28 Si yields K sup minus + X and sup 28 Si + sup 28 Si yields. pi. sup minus + X at 2. 1 GeV/nucleon and at 0 degree in the laboratory frame

K{sup {minus}} and {pi}{sup {minus}} production at 0{degree} in the lab has been measured for the reaction {sup 28}Si + {sup 28}Si at 2.1 GeV/nucleon incident kinetic energy. The K{sup {minus}} invariant cross-section is represented, approximately, by E(1d{sup 2}{sigma}/p{sup 2}dpd{Omega} Si + Si {yields} K{sup {minus}} = 2.68 e{sup {minus}} (E*/9.7)mb -GeV/sr - (GeV/c){sup 3}. The K{sup {minus}} non-invariant cross-section can be expressed as (1d{sup 2}{sigma}/p{sup 2}dpd{Omega}) Si + Si {yields} K{sup {minus}} = 5.17 e{sup {minus}}(E*/87.97) mb/sr - GeV/c){sup 3} where E* is the K{sup {minus}} kinetic energy in MeV evaluated in the nucleus-nucleus center-of-mass frame. A total K{sup {minus}} cross-section of 1.04 {plus minus} 0.26 mbarn is inferred for isotropic production.The total cross-section for {pi}{sup {minus}} production, assuming isotropy, is 8.88 {plus minus} 1.18 barn. Mechanisms for the sub-threshold production of K{sup {minus}} are discussed and {pi}{sup {minus}} production for the reaction {sup 28}Si + {sup 28}Si {yields} {pi}{sup {minus}} + X is compared to K{sup {minus}} in {sup 28}Si + {sup 28}Si {yields} K{sup {minus}} + X and {pi}{sup {minus}} production in {sup 12}C + {sup 12}C {yields} {pi}{sup {minus}} + X.
