Spin-orbit deformations deduced from analyzing powers for inelastic neutron scattering from /sup 54/Fe, /sup 56/Fe, /sup 58/Ni, /sup 60/Ni, /sup 120/Sn, and /sup 208/Pb

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. C; (United States)
Analyzing powers A/sub y/(theta) for inelastic scattering of 10-MeV neutrons to the first excited states of /sup 54/Fe, /sup 56/Fe, /sup 58/Ni, /sup 60/Ni, /sup 120/Sn, and /sup 208/Pb have been measured at a few selected angles. These data were analyzed using a coupled channels code in which the full Thomas form of the spin-orbit potential is assumed. The magnitudes of the observed spin-orbit deformations, which were found to be similar to those for (p,p') in each case, contradict recent suggestions based on microscopic nuclear structure considerations.
