Mediterranean Action Plan: an interim evaluation

A discussion of the Mediterranean Action Plan, which involves 17 countries and is coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) covers Mediterranean pollution, e.g., by oil and gasoline additives; evolution of the plan; activities in support of the plan including legal consultations, continued assessment of environmental conditions (e.g., with respect to oil and petroleum hydrocarbons in marine waters), administrative and financial support from UNEP, and coordination (e.g., of training and equipment supply); evaluation of individual projects, including data problems; the MED I project designed to assess current and predict future oil pollution levels in the Mediterranean in order to facilitate contingency planning; achievements of the plan, e.g., the collection of data that are relevant to standard setting or regulatory requirements; and the plan in broader perspective.
