Enhancing the standard model
Five topics concerning extensions of the standard model are discussed. An explanation for the approximate symmetries of the electroweak interactions that arises naturally in models in which the quarks, leptons, and Higgs are all composite states of strongly interacting fermions is discussed and exemplified. Quark mass ratios and mixing angles are reproduced from models in which the fermions and Higgs are composite states. The low energy properties of the invisible axion are discussed in the effective field theory language. The size of CP violating effects is invisible axion models is estimated, using the techniques of effective field theories and effective chiral lagrangians. Finally, an extension of the standard model in which CP is spontaneously broken and CP breaking is transmitted to the fermions by scalar leptoquarks is presented.
