Excitation of convection cells by Bernstein modes

The mechanism for the nonlinear excitation of convective motion in a plasma by Bernstein modes is studied. The growth rate of the decay instability of a monochromatic Bernstein wave is derived, and the direction of energy cascading in the Bernstein-mode spectrum is determined. An equation is derived to describe the production of convection cells by a broad spectrum of Bernstein waves. The approximately steady-state turbulence level and the coefficient of the electron diffusion resulting from the convective motion are estimated.
