The total cross sections and the distributions with respect to the longitudinal and transverse momenta of the pseudoscalar mesons produced in proton-nucleon collisions are calculated in the framework of the quark-fusion model. In the calculations of the transverse distributions of the secondary mesons, it is assumed that the transverse momentum of a secondary meson is determined by the transverse momenta of the fusing quark and antiquark. Resonance contributions to the yield of pseudoscalar ..pi.. and K mesons are taken into account. It is shown that the fusion parameter is the same for vector and pseudoscalar mesons of different masses, and this makes it possible to use the model under consideration to describe production of charmed pseudoscalar and vector mesons in proton-nucleon collisions. A comparison of the results of the calculations with experiment shows that this model makes it possible to obtain a perfectly satisfactory description of the available experimental data in the region of small transverse momenta (q/sub perpendicular/< or approx. =1.5--2 GeV/c) of the secondary mesons.
