The Bauschinger effect in fine-grained Al-Ti alloys prepared by mechanical alloying

The mechanically alloyed (MA) Al-Ti alloys have shown good ambient and elevated temperature properties. The MA Al-Ti alloys are characterized by the presence of large volume fractions of submicron sized Al{sub 3}Ti particles within a fine grain aluminum matrix. The Young`s modulus of Al{sub 3}Ti phase was reported to be 216 GPa. Hence, the presence of the Al{sub 3}Ti phase is very effective in increasing the stiffness of the MA aluminum alloys. The modulus of MA Al-Ti alloys has been shown to increase linearly with increasing the volume fraction of Al{sub 3}Ti, that the increment is {approximately}1.1 GPa for every 1 vol.% Al{sub 3}Ti. A high strain-hardening rate at the early stage of deformation (plastic strain {var_epsilon}{sub p} < 0.02) followed by a nearly steady state flow was observed in the MA Al-Ti alloys. This kind of deformation behavior is quite common in MA alloys. It is therefore of great interest to study the deformation behaviors at small strains in these alloys. In this work, the Bauschinger effect at small strains ({var_epsilon}{sub p} < 0.01) of MA Al-Ti alloys with Ti content ranging from 4 to 12 wt.% was studied.
