Pre-creep strain on single crystal Ni{sub 3}Al
- Univ. of Birmingham (United Kingdom)
Combination tests involving both constant strain-rate deformation and creep have been carried out on single crystal Ni{sub 3}Al(Ta 0.5%) with compression axis [15 5 {bar 1}]. Specimens were pre-strained 3% at constant strain-rate ({approximately}10{sup {minus}4} s{sup {minus}1}) at room temperature (RT) and at 520 C (just below the peak temperature of flow stress vs temperature T{sub p}) respectively. Subsequently, both pre-strained specimens were subjected to creep at the same stress level, 330 MPa, and temperature, 520 C. After the combination tests, slip trace analysis was performed and dislocation structures were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results suggest that not only pre-creep strain, but also the temperature of pre-creep deformation, affect the subsequent creep. It was found that specimens pre-strained at room temperature had a lower creep resistance while those pre-strained at 520 C had a higher resistance than virgin specimens crept under the same conditions, although the operative slip systems were the same and quite similar dislocation structures were observed.
